Kilkee

Kilkee takes its name from ‘Cill Caoidhe’ or ‘Coidhe's Church’, from the site of a little burial ground and it is Loop Head’s Peninsula main Town.

Kilkee is situated on Moore Bay. A beautiful horse-shoe shaped bay, which entrance is protected by the stunning reef Duggerna Rocks. Kilkee has been a popular tourist destination since the Victorian era – for almost 200 years. A passenger steamer boat service began crossing the river between Limerick and Kilrush in 1816 and visitors started arriving in its thousands to take to the beach in Kilkee. It became a favourite bathing place for the Victorian aristocrats. Its popularity was further intensified with the opening of the West Clare Railway in July 2nd, 1887.
